My horrifying realisation – it’s been over 2.5 years since I visited the GP.

I booked myself in to go and see a GP today for a regular check as baby #2’s due date is rapidly approaching and I wanted to make sure I was in tip top shape beforehand. Nothing out of the usual, I go to the doctor regularly, or so I thought…

While waiting to be called I realised that I haven’t been to the GP since my son was born. Over two and half years ago and who knows how long before that it was that I went.

I don’t have a reason or an excuse, I just hadn’t gotten around to booking it in. If I’d had a cold and needed a med cert for work I’d just dropped into a walk in clinic or a pharmacy and picked one up. I’d been for my annual skin check to make sure I wasn’t carrying any nasties around. I’d been to the dentist for my regular clean and reminder to floss. I had not been to the GP.

The GP was great about it and did the usual checks: height, weight, historical overview, sent me for full bloods, smoker, how much are you drinking, etc. and I’m really pleased I went. I was reminded that this isn’t uncommon for men and it’s something I’d like to raise and start a discussion on.

My question dads, is how long is it since you last went to the doctor? My challenge to you is to make time to go in November before Christmas and the silly season are upon us. No excuses, no reasons, no I’m too busy. Just get it done for you and your families.

It won’t be two and a half years until I’m in there again.

Brendon.
